Alpin hike in the Sardona cauldron (2. August 2015)
We started off by taking the train at 0633hr from Basel and arrived in Elm at about half past nine. To save us some time and effort we took the Tschinglenbahn from Elm to Nideren (1480m). The Tschinglenbahn carries only 4 people at a time and took us over impressive deep gorges saving us rougly 600m accend. After arriving in Nideren we begin hiking up to Martismadhütte in the light drizzle and fog.
We arrived at Martinsmadhütte after about an hour and had a short break before continuing the hike up to Grischsattel (2760m) or rather pt.2760 as labelled on the hiking sign. The fog often obstructed the scenery but occasionally we were treated with the view of the impressive Sernftal. The hiking path after Martinsmadhütte is labelled as blue-white T4 trail and is composed of crumbling slate rocks.
After scrambling up the rocky terrain we arrived at the trickiest portion of the hike that involves maneuvering along the rocky outcrop of the mountain. There are occasionally thick wires to aid your balance but the slippery conditions demanded great care as a fall here would definitely be rather deadly. After the rocky outcrop, it was again hiking up to steep rocky grounds before arriving at Grischsattel at around 1330hr.
We had our lunch break here in the fog before proceeding our 1800m descend to Films. The descend was not technically challenging and we managed to catch a glimpse of the Tschingelhörner when the weather got much better later in the day.
